Plays 1: The Pitchfork Disney, the Fastest Clock in the Universe, Ghost from a Perfect Place
Published in Paperback by Methuen Publishing, Ltd (July, 1998)
Authors: Phillip Ridley and Philip Ridley
Average review score:

an essential dramatist
as fine a writer as england has produced since the second world war. these plays represent bond simply and completely, as a man of passion and vision and a writer that any reader or writer MUST reckon with if they wish to have an understanding of modern drama. genius, and handed out when the word is knowingly overused. here it is earned.

A social dramatist with insight into modern society.
If you are considering the plays of Bond there is no better place to start than here, at the beginning of his career. This volume contains his first three plays. Whether you have seen thse works performed or not is irrelevant. Just reading them is an interesting experience. This is essential modern literature! Bond's introductions (to all the volumes of his collected plays) are also essential. They have a socialist leaning but are not too preachy. Bond's self-educated working-class position gives his articulate essays a powerful punch. (A punch modern society needs.) I would buy these volumes just for these introductions, they are that good!

After this, go on to PLAYS:TWO for the brilliant LEAR.

A Portrait of Phillip: A story of suspense
Published in Paperback by Writers Showcase Press (August, 2002)
Author: J. P. Bowie
Average review score:

What an enjoyable reading experience!
This is a truly impressive debut by J.P. Bowie. We have a real page turner that is engrossing to the point that it's hard to put it away. You will be drawn in quickly by the characters and find yourself anxious to find out what is going to happen next.
This novel is written intelligently and doesn't talk down to its readers. It's filled with suspense and loving bonds between families, friends, and lovers. While the main characters are gay, the universal themes will appeal to everyone. I highly recommend this book and appeal to the author to please write a sequel. I want to know what happens to the characters next!!!

A Portrait Of Phillip
Be advised. Once you begin reading this impressive first
outing written by J.P. Bowie, you will not be able to put it
down until you've finished the entire book. The pages literally
seem to race by. Bowie has an inate knack for introducing
characters that are so fully dimensional, so well described and
articulated, that you find yourself really caring about them as
if you'd known them for years.
The setting takes place in the beautiful southern California
beach community of Laguna .... The story revolves around main protagonist, Peter, who
after waking up from a 3-year coma, finds out that he and his
lover, Phillip, were victims of what was originally thought to
be a hate crime. He also discovers that Phillip was killed in
the attack. We witness his heroic struggle to try and remember
events leading up to the murder, and how his life is forever
transformed by those around him who offer their friendship and
support in his seemingly impossible quest to find the perpetra-
tors.
Although most of Bowie's main characters happen to be gay,
this book will appeal to anyone who champions good over evil,
justice over greed and inhumanity. It is written with a casual,
breezy style, sprinkled with generous doses of intelligence, wit,
and charm. Unlike many so called "gay" novels where most of the
gay characters are portrayed as either tragic or dysfunctional,
Bowie's crew of cast members are confident, self-aware, and well-
adjusted - a perspective that lends the story an upbeat tone even
in the midst of danger and moments that are sometimes heart-
breakingly poignant.
This is not only a story of murder and suspense, it is one of
love, friendship, and the indominatble human spirit. It's an
emotional roller coaster that will draw you in, take you up and
down, and leave you fully satisfied and entertained. You don't
necessarily have to be gay to enjoy this book. I highly recom-

mend it to anyone who appreciates writing that is thoughtful,
clever, and intelligent. Bowie is all of the above.

Post-Secular Philosophy: Between Philosophy and Theology
Published in Paperback by Routledge (January, 1998)
Author: Phillip Blond
Average review score:

The cutting edge of doing philosophy
The conversation between philosophy and theology has at long last been rejoined after centuries of animosity and slander. This tentative rejoining has grown out of necessity; for, as Blond's excellent introduction makes plain, secularist philosophy has bequeathed to us a world of bloody discontinuities which threatens to choke us. This volume is an exciting first salvo across the bow of a bankrupt secularism whose contemporary devotees are stewing in their own juices, and whose stammerings are nothing more than desperate cries for help. The book also opens up exciting and lively new areas of philosophical reflection.

an outstanding renewal of Christian theology
One of the most important and interesting accounts of the relationship between philosophy and theology that I have ever read. The book is a collection of edited papers that attempts to cover the way in which modern philosophy has refused to consider God except on its own secular terms. The long introduction by Phillip Blond is especially compelling. The introduction argues that the secular philosophical settlement is highly questionable. It outlines an alternative Christian ontology which Blond contends transcends the secular opposition of post-modernism and modernism, he argues that the world itself demands an entirely different account of its own nature. Avoiding a subjective religiousity Blond argues that Christianity is written into the character of the world and our perception of it!!

The Postmodern Bible: The Bible and Culture Collective
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (February, 1997)
Authors: George Aichele, Fred W. Burnett, Elizabeth A. Castelli, Robert M. Fowler, David Jobling, Stephen D. Moore, Gary A. Phillips, Tina Pippin, Rgina M. Schwartz, and Wilhelm Wuellner
Average review score:

A Must
The Postmodern Bible provides what is as close as anyone will ever get to a contemporary handbook on "postmodern" methods of approaching, reading, using and interpreting the Bible. One might ask why such a book is needed. I would reply that this book is needed because it implicates the readers of the Bible in the matters it wishes to bring to bear in biblical study. This book attempts to show (in my estimation) that reading the Bible is a social act, a personal act, a political act and a cultural act. And this book preaches what it practices for it is written by a self-styled "Bible and Culture Collective", a group of scholarly "young turks" no less, who amply demonstrate that projects worked on together need not end up being mish-mashes of the wants and desires of those composing them.

This book has both direction and drive. In seven compact yet thorough discussions we are introduced, in theory and practice, to seven contemporary approaches to the practice of biblical reading. Many, if not all, of these (reader-response criticism, poststructuralism, feminist and womanist criticism) are hardly novel outside of the biblical field but then that seems the point of this book; that is, to attempt (or continue to attempt) to intergrate biblical studies ever more closely with, or into, literary studies and cultural studies. This seems the pervasive agenda of this book.

I must admit that I have an interest in reviewing this book, however. I was taught for three years as an undergraduate by one of the "Bible and Culture Collective", Stephen D. Moore. I can confirm that the Collective, if Moore be an example, do indeed practice what they preach in this book. I have to say it sets the Bible on fire in new and exciting ways. If you want to engage the Bible from some new angles or just want to get up date and clear in your mind on contemporary methods of biblical interpretation then get this book. It has no serious challengers in its field to date.

Smart and Unflinching
If you've ever been puzzled by the formula of 'post-modern' and 'biblical studies,' then you'd be wise to pick up this exhaustive and personable piece of academic fervor. Among others, The Postmodern Bible fuses epistemological, religious, and cultural frameworks into a textual craft that will keep you poised with more questions. I recommend this book to anyone who takes the Bible seriously - whether you're a theologian, academic, or a heady poser, you'll want to have this book on the shelves of your mind.

Culture and caring
Impressive undertaking Reviewer: Merry Beeson from Tulsa, Ok USA I have been using the book for a folk healing class at the university level. The short reviews and the amazing pictures provide an excellent foundation to the course. I wish it were less expensive I would ask all the students to buy it. The pictures are powerful. It drives home our commonalities and gives land locked students access to other worlds.

Pyramids by Jeunesse is MY First Discovery Book!
Anything Egyptian I "gravitate to" and the PYRAMID and SPHINX on its front cover forced me to peruse further. Am I ever-so-glad that I did. What a great book! Inbetwixt the pages are these fantastic painted brightly transparent pages to accentuate certain nuances throughout the book. I love this book! For the Children's Room of the Library in which I work, I ordered the entire series in English, Spanish and German. If I were to be stuck on an island, with only one series to be able to take, it would definately be this series. My FIRST DISCOVERY with Jeunesse's "Pyramid" was MY First Discovery of this wonderful series. Do investigate for yourself, and you will be happy that you did!

Quest for the Rose
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Publishing (November, 1997)
Author: Phillips
Average review score:

The best rose book published!
The importance of this book in serious rose research lies in the photographs of the roses in their growing habitat. Most rose books show close-ups of the flowers, rather than the entire bush, making it difficult to see how large the flowers are in relation to the leaves and the plant. Seeing the plants growth habit is also important in choosing a rose, which this book illustrates most admirably. In addition, the historical facts and cultivation information reward the researcher with the most complete volume on roses published to date. If you must buy only one rose book, this is the one to own!

Wonderful complete rose guidebook. Great pictures'
This book provides an in depth history of the rose, plus modern roses. It gives good descriptions of the plant, its care and even its scent. Lots of good photographs

The Random House Book of Indoor and Greenhouse Plants Vol. 1
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (December, 1997)
Authors: Roger Phillips and Martyn E. Rix
Average review score:

Best Reference Garden Books Ever
This, and all other Random House Books of this genre, are consumate reference books for the serious or semi-serious gardener. Photos show entire plant from root to bloom and give all information required for cultivation. Wonderful for determining what to order amidst far-blown catalogue jargon. A must if you on well on the path to becoming a serious gardener indoors or out. (We all do both, don't we?)

A comprehensive, well illustrated and indispensable guide
Random House's guide to Indoor and Greenhouse plants Vol. II (I have not yet read Vol. I) is the first popular exotic plant dictionary I have seen that can approach the quality and comprehensiveness of the much more expensive Exotica or Tropica by Graf. This book provides clear descriptions and very nice photos of a variety of exotic plants from around the globe. Unlike many indoor plant books, this does not limit itself to the plants typically found in an average garden center, but covers many collector plants. The book's coverage of South African, Australian, Asian and South American species is much more comprehensive than any I have seen in other popular plant dictionaries. Entries are limited to physical description of each species, habitat and growth data, and brief information on pot and greenhouse cultivation. There are no separate sections on cultivation in this volume. I have been waiting for a book like this for some time and highly recomend it to both ! ! casual home gardeners and to collectors.
